February’s Article of the Month

Assessment of the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Injectable Lidocaine and a Lidocaine-Impregnated Latex Band for Castration and Tail Docking in Lambs

Check out a new publication in the Journal Animals, authored by Chinook Contract Research and co-authored by ACER Consulting!

Summary of the article

Common practices in lamb husbandry, such as tail docking and castration, induce pain and discomfort, prompting industries to recommend or mandate pain management. This study evaluated the efficacy of the standard injectable lidocaine for pain relief in lambs and explored the potential of a lidocaine-impregnated elastration ligation band to provide sustained local anesthesia over an extended period, presenting it as a promising alternative for long-term pain management.

Dairy Farmers of Canada Launch New Dairy Science Resources

Check out the Dairy Research Hub Online now!

We’ve been busy working alongside DFC and Canadian dairy science research teams to co-develop a suite of informational infographics, podcasts, videos, and more! These resources help share the results of 13 research projects funded under Dairy Research Cluster 3. All resources are now available under the new Resources by Topic section on the DFC website.

For the launch of these new resources, DFC would like to begin by highlighting 5 research projects related to herd management and genetic improvement. Check out the flyer below to learn more, and stay tuned for information related to other research themes in the coming months - we encourage you to share this announcement and resources through your networks!

Farmed Animal Antimicrobial Stewardship Initiative (FAAST)

FAAST is an online hub that aims to provide farmed animal owners and their veterinarians with the news, tools, and resources they need to reduce antimicrobial resistance.

The FAAST website, developed for the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association by ACER Consulting, hosts 18 podcasts and 15 interactive learning modules related to antimicrobial stewardship across all commodity groups in Ontario, plus additional modules on topics like benchmarking and biosecurity management. For instance, check out episode 1 of the podcast series below, where we chat with Dr. John Prescott, an internationally recognized expert in antimicrobial resistance.

We encourage you to explore the resources and share with anyone interested in learning more about antimicrobial stewardship in livestock!
