12 Years of Evolution
Since our beginning over a decade ago, ACER Consulting has grown from a one-person research consultancy to a team of 10 experts serving 80+ organizations worldwide with expanded services in research, communication, quality assurance, and creative solutions. We're helping build a more resilient agricultural sector by bridging the gap between science and action every day.
With the start of a new year, ACER’s Director and Principal Consultant Steven Roche took some time to sit down and reflect on where we began, what our company looks like today, and where we hope to go in the coming years. We hope you'll enjoy learning a bit more about our journey in this article.

What can't colostrum do? Exploring the effects of supplementing colostrum after the first day of life: A narrative review.
Published in the Journal of Dairy Science
In a nutshell: This review looks at new ways to use colostrum for dairy calves, beyond just the initial feedings after birth. While colostrum is known to provide essential antibodies for newborn calves, recent research suggests that giving colostrum and transition milk for a longer period can improve calf health and development. Benefits include better gut health, higher health scores, and fewer diseases like diarrhea and respiratory issues. Colostrum may also help calves recover from diarrhea and support them during weaning. However, scientists are still unsure exactly how colostrum provides these benefits, and more research is needed to understand it fully.

Figure 1 from Renaud and Steele (2024) shows how cows continue to produce milk that differs from mature milk after colostrum production.

The veterinary profession is undergoing significant changes, driven by pandemic challenges and new legislation in Ontario. For instance, corporate-owned clinics now represent 1 in every 5 veterinary hospitals in Canada. These changes necessitate and drive innovation in veterinary care and team-based practices, and are the focus of a new podcast series developed for the College of Veterinarians of Ontario.
Elevating the Veterinary Team explores how Ontario veterinary organizations are collaborating to improve patient and client outcomes through cultural and operational adjustments. Listen to Episode 1 below and visit the CVO website to access all available episodes!
